I went to see Alex Ross of the New Yorker speak at Foyles last night. He is an excellent speaker! He discussed his desire for ‘classical music’ to lose its ‘classical’ label, his interest in critics opening themselves to work outside their genre, and was generally charming and informative. His website gives some semblance of this experience - he did a bit on the descending lament as a musical motif, and this page gives audio samples as a companion to the book. Awesome.
John Fahey. Solid bro.

Odetta: Long Ago Far Away
Odetta Sings Dylan (fucking fantastically).
Sam Cooke & The Soul Stirrers - Touch the Hem of His Garment (via fernqueiroz)
Current favourite song for the shop.
This is a performance.
Karen Dalton: Something on Your Mind
This is pretty much perfect.
The languid laziness of her delivery just floors me, like you think she might never get some of the words out, then they just roll on forever and you don’t care.
