I wasn’t going to say anything, but the Salinger worship is getting a bit out of hand. Honestly, people. Catcher in the Rye is basically a Judy Blume book that grew a little hair on its balls.
Before all you English majors get your panties in a twist, go pull that paperback with the red cover off your top shelf and give it a fresh look now that...
Just read a Saul Bellow short story.
‘Father-to-be’.
Was OK. The progression from despair to resignation is neat.
By way of example, let’s say it’s an average day, and you get up in...
– A speech by the late David Foster Wallace | Books | The Guardian
(The old source I had for this went offline, so save this one before it goes too. Had a nice chat with a friend about DFW tonight in relation to our worldviews. One of the things that blows me away is how much work he puts into this...
Idea from Jack.
Make students make a graph of a poem. (Which is an activity that doesn’t really make sense.) Then make them explain why their graph makes sense.
I am thinking of doing this with Joe Dunthorne’s “Sestina for my friends”.
It involves a weird fluctuation in the idea of being ‘calculating’ that affects the poem more and less in different places. It is an...

Orange, by Ellen Kennedy
I wish my life consisted only of riding my bike with you down a giant hill that never stopped while listening to music with no one else around in the middle of nothing, except a few shiny and relaxing lights above in the sky like stars but a little brighter and more orange

I am working on a 'poetic conventions' class.
So I am just going to read the poetry books I have in my room for the next hour, and post stuff to Tumblr based on that.
I made a blog for my shop tonight.
Oxfam Dalston on Wordpress.
I didn’t design anything for it. I assembled text and images. I put a map up and some information on visiting. I put information up on volunteering.
I am not sure if shops really need blogs. It might be useful for people who try and find information about us. I don’t want to have to worry about rankings.
Anyways.

I Cleaned My Bike Last Night.
It had been making a whirring noise.
I put down some newspaper, turned my bike upside-down, and took off the back wheel. I filled a basin with hot soapy water and used an old sponge to take off the caked-on dirt along the frame. I used a rag to clean the rims of my tires. I let it dry then put it all back together.
It felt like a good thing to do at the start of a new year.
