I started and haven’t finished Infinite Jest. I will. This book gave me a lot this year. So did David Foster Wallace. Rigorous, humble, light. This is a good book.

There weren’t really any good ones. I had Choc Chip Poppets. They tasted weird. I didn’t finish them. The film started. It was not how I expected it to start. It was intriguing. It made me think about how it...

‘She blazed to her feet, but the cry that was meant for a woman’s appeal came out, through her tightening lips, as the whine of a wife. “Can’t they wait?”’
— The bold is Grace; the italic is Ralph; the bold and italic is Grace, Ralph, and the narrator. Grace and Ralph are about to get married. Yates, through his extremely adept use of focalisation, shows...

She spent most of her life not noticing that she was in it. Those were the good times, when she was on assignment, in some country where no one knew her, from which she would report back on mass casualties and her own safety. But there were other times — usually in New York, usually at parties — when there was nothing that wasn’t her body. She became claustrophobic in her tight...
